January 1900: Entertainment in Aid of the Soldiers’ Home
An article on page six of The Glasgow Herald, on Wednesday the 17th of January, 1900, informs readers that:
“The Scottish Rifles at present stationed at Maryhill will be paraded in the barrack square, and, headed by the
band of the regiment, march to the Theatre-Royal. A sum of £1000 is required to pay off the debt on the
institution and to assist in providing furnishings. Of the £500 per annum required to meet the expenditure,
£450 has already been provided, chiefly in donations of £1 so that only £50 per annum is required to keep the
institution going.”
